«Northanger Abbey» is a novel by the English writer Jane Austen (1775–1817), written in the Gothic style fashionable at the time with irony characteristic of the author. Seventeen-year-old Catherine Morland is fascinated by the romance of «gothic novels» and often imagines herself as the heroine of such works. While vacationing at a resort where she was invited by rich friends, Catherine meets Henry Tilney and falls in love with him. Henry’s family estate — Northanger Abbey — fills her mind with terrible suspicions. Locked rooms, mysterious chests, cryptic notes create adark gothic atmosphere in the girl’s soul. Can she trust Henry, or is he part of a conspiracy? Catherine looks for secrets in ordinary events until Henry convinces her to see the danger in confusing life with literature.
